A tired dog is a happy dog - nothing could ring more true.
An under-stimulated dog can be a wrecking ball, prone to destructive behaviors like digging, chewing, excessive barking, and separation anxiety.
Left unchecked, a bored dog is going to get into trouble. A LOT!
Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, with each breed having its own set of exercise requirements. While all dogs need exercise, some breeds require more than others.
In this blog post, we'll take a look at the exercise requirements of some of the most popular dog breeds. Whether you're considering getting a new dog or are just curious about how much your current pet needs to move, read on for some helpful tips!
Shih Tzu
Shih Tzus are little diminutive canines popular in the Philippines due to their outgoing personalities and loving, friendly demeanor.
Shih Tzu pups don't require a lot of activity because, even as adults, they are still quite little. Puppies only need about 5 minutes of exercise a few times a day, as prolonged periods of activity at this age can lead to joint and bone problems later in life.
The quantity of activity a Shih Tzu requires will increase as he approaches adolescence. But how much is it?
Shih Tzus have modest exercise needs and require approximately 30 to 60 minutes of daily activity, and because they are little dogs, it is advisable to divide their daily walks into two or three sessions.
Remember that having fun and playing with your fur baby is also exercise, so you should set aside some free time for him to relax so he doesn't get overstimulated or exhausted.
Pomeranian
Pomeranians are one of the most exuberant and lively tiny dogs known, having been bred from sled dogs.
This is an active breed, but because they are little, only about 30 minutes of activity every day is needed. They're an excellent dog to have if your apartment is canine-friendly but you don't have a large backyard because they don't require as much activity as larger breeds.
Pomeranians also benefit from one or two daily walks, each of which should be at least 15 minutes long and be at a vigorous pace for the Pom. Walks can last 30 or even 40 minutes, depending on how much your four-legged pal craves his time outside and whether you've taken the right seasonal precautions to keep him safe.
Pug
Due to distinctive flattened faces and energetic attitudes, pugs are one of the most popular dogs around.
Pugs have moderate exercise needs and will do well with a 30-minute walk a day or two 15-minute walks.
More playtime, shorter walks, and a variety of brain-stimulating activities should all be part of your daily routine.
Keep in mind Pugs are short-snouted dogs and can overheat rapidly, especially in the Philippines, so bring loads of water and keep monitoring for dehydration.
Beagle
The courageous Beagle is a sporty, athletic hunting dog that was originally bred to be a scent hound.
Beagles have moderate to high energy levels and will benefit from a daily walk of an hour or more. Young Beagles under 12 months might be happy with a shorter walk but lots of playtime in between.
Beagles with higher activity levels might require a jog or run in the place of a walk. A vigorous game of fetch should also be able to tire your Beagle out.
Agility, scent work, tracking, flyball, swimming, and obedience training are some of the interesting activities for you guys to bond over.
Labrador Retriever
Labrador is the most popular dog breed not only in the Philippines but all around the globe.
A well-grown and healthy adult Labrador Retriever will require 1 hour of exercise every day as a general rule. The more enthusiastic Labrador Retrievers require 1.5 hours or more exercise every day while
the more relaxed Labs require only 45 minutes of exercise every day. This can include swimming, fetching, running, jogging, or anything else in addition to a calming, casual walk.
Labradors are intelligent dogs, and while they will enjoy their daily walks with their owner and human family, you can try some of the interesting activities with your Labrador such as flyball, tracking, and obedience training.
Conclusion
Exercising in the Philippines might be challenging. Always try to stick to early mornings and early evenings to avoid overheating, and keep a close eye on your pooch.
Keeping your dog tired and happy will save you heaps of trouble in the long run that you might get from an under-exercised, bored dog. Have fun!
